Half Marathon Eve

Like a child on Christmas Eve, I want today to be over and tomorrow to arrive. For tomorrow is the day of my first ever half marathon. My impatience, however, is not the result of excitement, but of the need to just get on with the job. Yes, I’m anxious. Back in January it seemed like a crazy idea for me to sign up for a half marathon, having only […]

RED January Day 26 – Parkrun volunteer and time for a walk

I didn’t get to run at parkrun today, because I was taking a turn at volunteering instead. I had volunteered once previously, when I was given the responsible job of handing out finishing tokens. These record runner’s positions, which in turn allows timings to be allocated to the correct runners. Big responsibility. This time, I was trusted with the even greater task of timing each runner as they passed the […]

RED January Day 19, and a burning question

Today was parkrun day, so an easy choice for RED January. I completed days 17 and 18 with interval running on the 17th and a swim/water Pilates on the 18th. Nothing very exciting, but I got it done. Today was expected to be cold, with some possible light rain. When I arrived at Minehead, the rain had passed, there was no discernible wind, and there was even some blue showing […]

RED January Day 12 – Emotional

Parkrun today. I set myself the challenge of running/jogging the full 5K – no walking allowed. I felt well prepared. I’d already had three good runs this week. I’d rested my running legs on the previous day, opting for water pilates and a swim for day 11. I managed to arrive at Minehead parkrun just in time, missing the pre-run briefing. I’m not sure how this happened as I was […]

RED January Day 5 – Minehead parkrun

I’d like to tell you about Minehead Parkrun. It’s quite a small parkrun. Numbers fluctuate and, being a seaside town, we often have visitors. Today 117 runners completed the course . Minehead is a coastal town in the UK county of West Somerset. It’s near to Exmoor National Park, surrounded by stunningly beautiful countryside, and is well worth a visit (and I don’t even work for the Minehead Tourist Board!) […]

Winter solstice blues

At my first parkrun, someone said to me ‘if you can keep running through winter, by the spring you’ll be flying’. Easy enough in theory. With winter solstice in less than a week, short gloomy days, dark mornings and evenings, inhospitable weather, and the temptations of the festive season on the horizon, it’s easy to let things slip. Yesterday I wimped out of parkrun. The weather outside was truly frightful; […]

My first winter run

December 1st The first day of winter, and the day when excited children begin peeling open advent calendars for the big Christmas countdown. I lie in bed listening to torrential rain drum down. We’ve had a week of stormy weather, flooded roads and fallen trees. My daily commute across the gorgeous Quantock Hills has been challenging. But the weekend is here now, and it’s time for my first ever […]
