Reconnecting with cycling

One of the better aspects of the long and strange summer of 2020 has been rediscovering cycling. We haven’t been away on holiday at all this year. We’ve had days out, been for lots of walks, done some decorating, DIY and gardening (a “staycation” in the true meaning of the word – but I’m not going to get into that debate!) One of the days out was a trip to […]

Improvement is relative

A year ago I ran my first half marathon – Bridgwater Half Marathon. I’ve been reflecting a lot on this lately because, over the summer, running hasn’t been going so well for me. I’ve only been running for just under two years and, for the first eighteen months or so, it was progress all the way. Every time I compared runs on the same routes on Strava I’d be seeing […]

RED January Day 26 – Parkrun volunteer and time for a walk

I didn’t get to run at parkrun today, because I was taking a turn at volunteering instead. I had volunteered once previously, when I was given the responsible job of handing out finishing tokens. These record runner’s positions, which in turn allows timings to be allocated to the correct runners. Big responsibility. My afternoon was less productive. After lunch, I […]

A different kind of graduation

As each year comes to a close, we tend to reflect on the highs and lows of the year. For me, ‘graduating’ from NHS England’s Couch to 5K programme has been a definite high. This graduation means that I can now run for 30 minutes at a time. I don’t yet cover the full 5k in that 30 minutes, but I’m getting closer on each run. I hadn’t expected this […]

Festive food choices

It’s the last weekend before Christmas, and I’m doing okay. I’m exercising, and I’m happy with what I’m eating. I’m not going to say I’m ‘being good’, because I believe phrases like that are a huge part of the problem. Food is food, it should not be given moral value. Expressions such as being good, being naughty, deserving a treat, when applied to food, all serve to complicate and confuse […]
